Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ) variegated
This product is sold out
Originally found in Tanzania and Zanzibar, this succulent plant has a reputation for surviving almost any conditions. Though many consider this plant to be a type of desert cacti, it is actually an aroid (in the Araceae family). Commonly referred to as a ZZ plant, there is a lot of misinformation about how to care for this plant; with people saying that it doesn't need much light or that it barely needs to be watered.
If you follow this advice, you will likely have a plant that is dropping its leaves and/or not growing much at all! This is because in nature, it becomes dormant during the dry season and drops all of its leaves. Each of these leaves has the potential to root and grow into a separate plant. If you have your ZZ in low light conditions or barely water it, it is simply surviving and not thriving.
For optimum growth, this plant actually requires frequent watering, medium to bright indirect light and a well-draining potting mix. Similar to other members of the Araceae family, like Monstera, Philodendron and Anthurium.
The variegated version of this plant is not different in care, but will grow best in brighter light due to the lower amount of chlorophyll.
The 'Raven' cultivar of this plant is actually the name of the plant sold specifically by Costa Farms, but has become the typical term for a black ZZ plant in North America. The dark expression of green that appears black is a sport mutation of regular green Zamioculcas zamiifolia.
Medium to bright, indirect light. Will handle lower light, and even enjoys direct sun (if gradually introduced).
Water when soil is completely dried down, but do not leave dry for long periods of time.
Standard household humidity is all that is required. There is no detriment to keeping it in a higher humidity environment.
